Competition Obedience

Competitive obedience is made up of dog owners who started to train their dogs for fun and got hooked! Their dog did better than they ever expected and then they wanted to see how their dog stacked up so they entered a trial.

What is an obedience title really?

Connie Rick and Eastwind's Queen of Hearts CD, CGC, TDI "Hartlie"
taking their class and Highest Scoring Doberman in Trial
at Schooley's Mountain Kennel Club on August 31st, 1998

Obedience titles are given by several different organizations, The American Kennel Club , The United Kennel Club leave-site.gif (117 bytes) and the American Mixed Breed Obedience Registration .

In competition there are a set group of exercises that each dog/handler team must complete. There are a bunch of rules but it comes down to this: You go in the ring with 200 points. If you finish all the exercises with a remaining score of 170 and at least 50% of the points in each exercise you will get "a leg". Three legs under three different judges and you will receive a title. You don't have to beat anyone else to get a title. It's you against the perfect 200 score.

Neutered dogs may compete in obedience trials and, through the American Mixed Breed Obedience Registration mixed breeds can compete as well.

Each organization has slightly different requirements so contact them for details.
