About Dogs In Service
Dogs
In Service believes that dogs and humans can have a special bond that promotes a
working relationship. Years ago (and in some places even now) dogs had the opportunity to
do what they were bred to do. Dogs worked with man all day guarding or herding sheep,
hunting, pulling a wagon etc.
- Assistance Dogs have that opportunity again to work with their handler twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. For most dogs, that is heaven on earth.
- Pet Assisted Therapy Dogs work, with their handler, to motivate and inspire others. They too are lucky enough to have that special bond that a working dog may have with its handler.
Dogs
In Service trains a limited amount of Assistance Dogs (primarily Mobility Dogs)
each year. While it costs between $12,000 and $18,000 to raise, train, test and place each
dog Dogs In Service offers these dogs at a nominal cost to the handler.
We believe that no one would have to make the choice between obtaining an Assistance Dog
and getting any other necessary piece of medical equipment.
Dogs
In Service trains and supervises Pet Assisted Therapy Dog teams which helps
facilities maintain quality interactions. Dog/Handler teams are trained to interact with acute and
chronic care patients towards a therapeutic goal set by facility personnel. Dog/Handler teams are all volunteers who generously give their
time to train, visit and hone their skills. They are truly special people with very
special dogs.
Dogs
In Service Pet Assisted Therapy Teams must have annual health checks for both
humans and dogs and must re-certify their skills each year. There is no cost to facilities
for a Pet Assisted Therapy program.
Dogs
In Service is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization.
