Frequently Asked Questions
Can't
you train my dog for me?
Well, sure we could,
but you would be missing out on a unique opportunity to
build a relationship with your dog. You will still need
to spend time learning how to work with your dog
otherwise all you have is a dog who listens to us!. Your
dog would rather be trained by you than anyone else in
the world. Besides, it's very expensive to have someone
else train your dog.
My
dog is seven years old - isn't that too old to train him?
Your dog may be all grown up but he's not too
old to learn some new tricks! Older dogs are a bit more
set in their ways and may need more time and help but
they can all learn and change.
My
puppy is only three months old, surely she's too young to
go to school?
If your veterinarian says it is
okay for your pup to attend class then pack her satchel
and let's start learning. Puppies learn very quickly.
They tire easily so short sessions are best. Your puppy
is learning from you every day. Let's be sure she's
learning what you want her to know!
Do
I have to be mean to my dog - he's my best friend?
You sure don't have to be mean - and you shouldn't be.
Being mean never trained a dog to do anything. Dog
training is fun - not just for you , but for your dog as
well. It's a special time for your dog to have your
undivided attention (and a few treats too!). Your pup
should love his training time with you - and you'll enjoy
it too.
How
much time do I need to spend training my dog?
Five minutes three times a day, five or six days a week
for the weeks of class will have you well on your way.
Dog training is about real life so after you finish
classes you'll be training and working your dog all the
time without either of you realizing it. Every time your
dog sits patiently waiting for you to put down his food
dish, or waits to jump in the car until you tell her to,
or walks nicely on lead, or stands so you can wipe off
his paws, or waits to greet the pizza delivery person, or
lies quietly during the family dinner you will be reinforcing your dog's training. And your dog will be
working. And neither of you will have even noticed that
what you are really doing is obedience training because,
by then, it will be a part of your life.
