Animal Assisted Therapy - Level One

Have you ever thought about volunteering with your dog doing "Pet Therapy"? This class prepares dog and handler teams to visit chronic and acute care facilities including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and library reading programs. 

These classes will help prepare dog/handler teams to take the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen certification examination as well as the national certifications offered by various groups including The Delta Society, Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, TheraPet and Therapy Dogs International.  For more information on Animal Assisted Activities, Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Crisis Response please go to the Off site linkDogs In Service website.

Requirements
  • Prior participation in a group obedience class
  • Dogs under 1 year may take class but most organizations require the dog be at least 1 year old before certification

Recommended but not required:
Basic Obedience Levels 1 and 2
Intermediate Levels 1 and 2
Shaping Behavior Levels 1 and 2

Rules and Regulations

  • NO DOGS WILL BE PERMITTED ON THE PREMISES WITHOUT A COPY OF CURRENT IMMUNIZATION RECORDS
  • The same handler must handle the dog for the whole set of classes
  • Dogs must have current identification (ID tag) on their collars
  • Read the complete Barking Hills Rules and Regulations
  • Since we close our classes when full, there are no refunds once you have paid for class.

Holiday and Weather Closings

  • Please call (908) 996-9911 two hours before the start of your class to check for weather related closings. If classes have been cancelled, the machine will have a message stating so, otherwise, classes are on schedule.
  • Barking Hills is closed Independence Day weekend (July 4-6), Labor Day week: (September 1-6), Thanksgiving (November 27-30), Winter Holidays (December 24-January 1) and Memorial Day week (May 21st -26th - Join us at Camp Barking Hills!)
